Croutons are made from small, seasoned pieces of bread that are baked or fried until crispy. They are crunchy with a buttery flavor. Croutons are eaten in salads, soups, and sometimes on their own as a snack. The word crouton is derived from the French word crouton, a diminutive of croûte meaning “crust.” National Crouton Day is observed annually on May 13.

Directions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.

- Spread the cubes into an even layer on a baking sheet. Be sure to leave space between the cubes.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. The time needed for cooking will depend on the freshness of the bread. Stale bread may brown faster.
