Croutons

Croutons are made from small, seasoned pieces of bread that are baked or fried until crispy. They are crunchy with a buttery flavor. Croutons are eaten in salads, soups, and sometimes on their own as a snack. The word crouton is derived from the French word crouton, a diminutive of croûte meaning “crust.” National Crouton Day is observed annually on May 13.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Stir together bread, garlic powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Drizzle olive oil over the bread while stirring. Continue to stir until bread is coated and all the oil is absorbed.
  4. Spread the cubes into an even layer on a baking sheet. Be sure to leave space between the cubes.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. The time needed for cooking will depend on the freshness of the bread. Stale bread may brown faster.
  6. Remove croutons from oven and let cool.
