In 1904, while working as a soda jerk at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, pharmacy apprentice David Strickler was asked by a patron to come up with “something different.” He cut a banana lengthwise and scooped three ice cream flavors—vanilla, chocolate and strawberry—over the banana. He then drizzled hot fudge, caramel, and pineapple syrup above the ice cream, and topped it all with whipped cream and a cherry. This was the first banana split. The sundae variation traveled by word of mouth and became widely popular. Strickler eventually bought the pharmacy and renamed it Strickler’s Pharmacy. Today the spot is marked by a statue of a gigantic banana split.
