This creamy orange dessert is reminiscent of orange creamsicles. Jell-O salads reigned in 20th century America, climbing in popularity over the decades and reaching their peak in the 1950s. Gelatin dishes themselves date to medieval Europe, however, and jellied offerings were considered elite. The process of rendering collagen from animal bones was time consuming and labor intensive. When Jell-O was patented in 1897, the instant gelatin coincided with the spread of modern advancements like refrigerators. Jell-O was promoted as a light dessert after heavy meals. Fruit and cream-based Jell-O desserts are easy to prepare.
