During the late 1800s and early 1900s a milkshake consisted of just milk mixed with a syrup flavoring such as chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla. In 1911 the Hamilton Beach company created a drink mixer used to make milkshakes at soda fountains, and more people began asking for the treat to be made with ice cream. It wasn’t until the invention of the electric blender by Steven Poplawski in 1922 that the modern milkshake began being made in homes. Today in New England a milkshake is known as a frappe, and in Rhode Island it is called a cabinet.
