Turtle cake takes its name from the Turtles brand of candy that was created in 1918 by Johnson’s Candy Company (becoming DeMet’s Candy Company in 1923). The candy, the shape of which resembles a turtle, is made with pecans, caramel, and chocolate, and these are the main ingredients of turtle cake as well. Today there are a variety of dessert recipes utilizing the ingredients of Turtles candy, including turtle cheesecake, turtle cookies, turtle pie, turtle sundaes, turtle tart, and turtle brownies.
