The BLT sandwich is named for its primary ingredients: bacon, lettuce, and tomato. This combination of ingredients dates back to the early 1900s; however, it didn’t become widespread until after World War II when the ingredients became more readily available year-round. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the sandwich became commonly known as a BLT. As one of the most popular sandwiches in the United States, recipes vary depending on personal preferences, with some choosing to toast the bread or add mayonnaise.
