The club sandwich often consists of two layers separated by a third slice of toast and consisting of turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. The sandwich first appeared in US restaurants in 1899, with its exact origin being up for debate. Originally it was made with slices of chicken; however, over time turkey has become increasingly popular. Being a tall sandwich, the club is often secured with toothpicks or cocktail sticks and cut into quarters. Clubs are commonly served with French fries or potato chips and garnished with a pickle.
