Curried beef is a flavorful dish often enjoyed over cooked rice or hot noodles. Sliced beef is cooked in a savory tomato sauce spiced with curry powder, which gives the dish its name. Curry powder is a blend of spices that dates to the 19th century. It is believed that the British, who once ruled India, created curry powder. The mixture may have been inspired by the Indian dish curry, which refers to heavily spiced sauces that vary by region. Curry powder commonly includes coriander, turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, and chili peppers. Similar spice blends were used about 4,000 years ago in regions of Pakistan and northern India.
