The hamburger is an American creation that first appeared sometime between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are numerous claims for invention of the hamburger we know today, all of which took place between 1885 and 1904. Most German immigrants traveling to the New World from the port of Hamburg landed in New York City and restaurants there responded by serving Hamburg-style steak to attract diners. By the end of the century Hamburg steak was popular in New York City and by 1930 the term was shortened to hamburger. The moment that a hamburger was first placed between two slices of bread to make a sandwich is unknown. Despite who made the sandwich first, it remains a culinary icon in the United States.
