Italian hot dogs are regional food originating in New Jersey, a state with more than 1 million residents of Italian ancestry. Variations include adding different meats in place of the hot dog, and sometimes French fries appear. Purists prefer natural casing hot dogs, and pizza bread rolls elevate what seems like a simple creation. The combination of peppers, onions, and potatoes is common in Italian American cooking.
