Northern New Jersey is famous for the Jersey Sloppy Joe, but the recipe is a far cry from what you might expect of a sandwich with that name. Legend has it that the mayor of Maplewood, New Jersey, a man named Thomas Sweeney, visited Cuba in the 1930s and had a sandwich at a bar called Sloppy Joe’s. He liked the sandwich so much that he commissioned a local deli in New Jersey to recreate it, and the rest is history.

Ingredients
- 3 large pieces rye bread, thin sliced
- 1 Tbsp butter, at room temperature
- 6 thin slices of deli meats of your choice (such as turkey, ham, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, and/or sliced beef tongue)
- 3 slices Swiss cheese
- ½ cup coleslaw, divided
- 1–2 Tbsp Russian dressing
Directions
- Lay the bread slices on a clean counter top or cutting board.
- Spread the butter on both sides of one slice, and only one side of each of the other two slices.
- Fit one slice of Swiss cheese onto one slice of a piece of bread that is buttered on one side.
- Spoon about half of the coleslaw over the cheese.
- Spread some Russian dressing over the coleslaw.
- Cover the dressing completely with three slices of deli meats.
- Top this with the slice of bread that is buttered on both sides.
- Place the other two slices of Swiss cheese on top of the buttered bread.
- Spoon remaining coleslaw over the cheese, and the remaining Russian dressing over the coleslaw.
- Completely cover the dressing with the remaining three slices of deli meats.
- Top with the last bread slice, buttered side down.
- Insert toothpicks so the sandwich stays together when you cut it.
Notes
Optional: If desired, you can toast the buttered rye in a skillet.
