Monte Cristo Sandwich

The Monte Cristo sandwich is a batter-dipped, fried version of a classic ham and cheese sandwich and a variation of the French dish called croque-monsieur. Recipes for the sandwich began showing up in American cookbooks in the 1930s, but it was found under names such as French sandwich, toasted ham sandwich, and French toasted cheese sandwich. A Monte Cristo should be crisp on the outside with creamy, melted Swiss cheese inside, along with ham and sometimes turkey as well. It is traditionally sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a side of jelly to dip it in.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1. Soften 1 tablespoon of butter and spread it lightly on one side of two slices of bread and both sides of the third slice of bread.
  2. 2. Spread mustard on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread and spread 1 teaspoon of jelly or jam on the unbuttered side of the other slice of bread.
  3. 3. Place one slice of cheese on top of the mustard followed by the ham, the slice of fully buttered bread, then the turkey, one slice of cheese, and topped with the remaining slice of bread, jelly side down.
  4. 4. Wrap the sandwich loosely with plastic wrap and place a heavy object on top of it for about 3–5 minutes to flatten it.
  5. 5. Whisk together the egg, milk, salt, and nutmeg in a shallow dish.
  6. 6. Remove the plastic wrap from the sandwich and dip it into the egg mixture, letting it absorb some of the liquid, but not enough that causes it to fall apart.
  7. 7. Combine the oil and remaining butter in a large skillet set over medium-high heat.
  8. 8. Place the sandwich into the hot oil and cook it for 3–4 minutes on each side or until it is golden-brown, and the cheese is melted.
  9. 9. Transfer the sandwich to paper towel to remove excess oil.
  10. 10. Heat the remaining jelly or jam in a small saucepan over low heat or in a microwave-safe dish in the microwave until warm.
  11. 11. Sprinkle the sandwich with powdered sugar and serve it hot with the warm jelly on the side for dipping.
