In the early days of the American Southwest, cultural exchanges between Navajos and Mexicans was common. Navajo culture was historically influenced by Spanish contact as well and co-exists with Latino cultures in the Southwest today. Navajo tacos are a signature Indian-Mexican fusion dish, with toppings including lettuce, cheese, beans, tomatoes, onions served on a base of fry bread. The meal is easy to prepare and customize to individual preferences.

Ingredients
- 4 pieces of fry bread
- 2 cups cooked pinto beans
- 2 cups lettuce
- Shredded ground chile peppers, to taste (optional)
- 2 medium tomatoes, diced
- 2 medium onions, diced
- ½ lb shredded cheddar cheese
- Chili sauce, as needed for serving (optional)
Directions
- Plate each of the pieces of fry bread.
- Layer on the beans, fresh vegetables, and cheese.
- Serve with chili sauce on the side.
