With a name meaning “toasted” in Spanish, this preparation is for fried tortillas with various toppings. Similar to taco fillings, these can include beans, meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa, and sour cream. Tostadas originate as a way to use stale tortillas. In Mexican cuisine, tostadas are commonly eaten as a side dish while in the US, tostadas are enjoyed as a main dish. Entering US cuisine through the Southwest’s cultural connection with Mexico, crunchy tostadas have become popular around the country.
