Waffles have a distinct honeycomb pattern and are made by cooking batter in a waffle maker. The word waffle has evolved over the years, stemming from the German word wafla, which means “honeycomb” or “cake.” Once sold mainly by street vendors, General Electric’s 1918 invention of electric waffle makers made the dish accessible for home cooking. Belgian waffles are larger and thicker than standard waffles and are made with a lighter batter cooked in a Belgian waffle maker.
