Created in 1896 at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, this salad was an instant success. Dining room manager Oscar Tschirky gets the credit for the hotel’s namesake salad, which was originally composed of apples, celery, and mayonnaise. Walnuts were a later addition, and some recipes also include raisins. This salad is usually served on a bed of lettuce and can include diced cooked chicken to make it more of a meal.
