The Irish turnip is known as a rutabaga or swede. Both turnips and rutabagas are members of the cabbage family with the rutabaga thought to be an ancient cross between a turnip and a cabbage. In Irish cuisine, chopped or mashed rutabaga and turnips is a favorite side, often served with chicken or ham. Easy to preserve through a long winter, these root vegetables are a favorite cold-weather dish. This recipe for Irish-style rutabaga and turnips is often prepared as a side dish for holiday meals.
