This savory and spicy meat sauce is a New York favorite. It’s almost like chili and could even be eaten on its own or as a topping for pasta or toasted bread. The recipe’s most common use, however, is as a topping for hot dogs and hamburgers.

Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 2½ cups tomato juice
- 1½ tsp yellow mustard
- 1 Tbsp ground black pepper
- 20 dashes hot sauce
- 5 tsp chili powder
- 2 tsp red pepper flakes
- ½ tsp salt
Directions
- Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the meat until no pink remains, about 8–10 minutes.
- Drain excess fat from the meat and transfer meat to a large saucepan.
- Add tomato juice, mustard, pepper, hot sauce, chili powder, red pepper flakes, and salt.
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 60 minutes, stirring often.
