Texas toast—thick-cut, buttered, and toasted until golden—was invented by Royce Hailey of the Pig Stand restaurant in Beaumont, Texas. In 1941, Hailey asked his bread supplier, Rainbow Bakery, to send him thicker slices of bread for toast. When the thick-cut pieces wouldn't fit in the restaurant's toasters, the bread was buttered on both sides and toasted in the oven. Served as a side dish, “Texas toast” was a hit. Now sold frozen by several companies, Texas Toast is easy to make fresh at home.
