Bhel puri is a popular snack dish among Americans of Indian descent. Originating in Mumbai, this dish spread throughout the country to become Indian's favorite snack, and today it is enjoyed throughout the world. This version is reminiscent of Indian chaat wallahs—chaat means "snacks," and wallah means "street vendor." Bhel puri is easily assembled in a home kitchen. The basic ingredients are dry, including rice puffs, sev (deep-fried vermicelli made from chickpea flour), tamarind chutney, and ground spices. The “wet” version includes fresh chopped tomatoes and potatoes.
