The deep-fried Mars bar originated in chip shops in Scotland, and went largely unnoticed until the 1990s. At that point, news stories began to circulate about the unhealthy Scottish diet, and TV personality Jay Leno picked up on the story and shared the fad with America. Similar candy bars, such as Snickers, Milky Way, or Bounty, can be substituted according to preference.
