Seven layer dip combines a host of traditional ingredients commonly found in Tex-Mex cuisine. Traditional ingredients include refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and black olives. This agglomeration is a fairly recent addition to Southwestern fare as it was only in the 1980s that it gained popularity throughout the US. Seven layer dip is typically served with tortilla or pita chips, but it also goes well with sliced vegetables.
