Amish legend says when children found these treats in their lunch bags they would shout, “Whoopie!” This dessert is a small “cake sandwich” and is the official state treat of Maine. A classic New England dessert, whoopie pies are also a tradition among the Pennsylvania Amish. The first whoopie pies were sold in 1925 in Lewiston, Maine, and by 1930 a recipe was included in a cookbook by the manufacturer of Marshmallow Fluff.
Closely associated with Maine, the state’s annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival has occurred since 2009. South Portland holds the world record for the largest whoopie pie, when one weighed in at 1,062 pounds on March 26, 2011.

Notes
There are many recipes for whoopie pies, some using shortcuts like a boxed cake mix and others with recipes for the filling that are based on powdered (confectioners') sugar and not including marshmallow fluff. There are also other flavors, including red velvet whoopie pies and pumpkin whoopie pies, to name just a few.
